LAS VEGAS—The Vision Council’s Lab Division honored several industry leaders with its Directors’ Choice Award and induction into the Lab Division Hall of Fame during Vision Expo West, held here, in September.

First and foremost, the Division named Steve Sutherlin, The Vision Council’s Lab Division liaison and former president of Sutherlin Optical, as its 2019 recipient of the Directors’ Choice Award. Sutherlin was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2008 and was honored in September for his more than 45 years in the optical industry.

In presenting the award to Sutherlin, VSP’s Swen Carlson, Chairman of the Lab Division, noted, “The impact Steve has had behind the scenes in the formation of the Lab Division is immeasurable.”

Inductees into the Lab Division Hall of Fame were Arman Bernardi, iCoat; Yvette Carranza, DVI; Ed DeRosa, Signet Armorlite; Skip Payne, IcareLabs; Kevin Rupp, Essilor; and Jorg Spangemacher, MAFO Magazine. The Lab Division Hall of fame was established in 1987 under the auspices of the Optical Laboratories Association.

DeRosa perhaps spoke for all of the inductees when he said, “The thing that’s different about the optical industry is simple: It’s the people. All of us compete against each other in business, but we all have the same goal: Improving sight. This is a noble goal.”

Meanwhile, Vision Monday and LABTALK hosted the Modern Lab event, an hour-long session that explored how smart investments enable optical labs to adapt and grow. Editors Andrew Karp and Brian Dunleavy presented the results of an exclusive research survey that probed investment trends among labs. They followed it with a lively panel discussion featuring five veteran lab executives: Javan Diaz of Simplify Optics, Paul Faibish of Plastics Plus, Andy George of LBC Optics and Wisconsin Optical, Bill Heffner of FEA Industries and Mike Tamerius of P.O.G. Labs. The event was made possible by Ultra Sponsors Satisloh and Schneider, and Premium Sponsors Coburn Technologies, Digital Vision Inc., Filtertech and Ultra Optics.
